Going to Germany

I will be going with my BF to Germany in May. He is going for work, so we'll be in Erlangen for the week and I will be at my leisure during the weekdays while he is working. Any suggestions for things to see for the medievally-minded tourist?

    You are not far away from Nürnberg.

    You must go to the "Germanisches Nationalmuseum Nürnberg"

    I absolutely second the Germanisches Nationalmuseum. Take the ICE (InterCityExpress) train to Nürnberg. It's worth the journey :-)

    if you can I would definately go to the GNM. Another place you may wish to go to is rothenburg ob der tauber.
    Its a well preserved medieval old town with its wall and so forth. Most tourist pictures have atleast one picture of this town =).

    If you have more time, you could go to Regensburg. Its a really beautiful medieval city only 125km / 1 hours drive away from Erlangen. You can visit the cathedral, the cathedral treasury just next to it and the Historical Museum where you can see stunning medieval tapestries. And next to the famous medieval Stone Bridge you can eat typical sausages at germanys oldes fast food restaurant - it was build for the people building the bridge in the 12th century! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regensburg

    Enjoy your stay in Erlangen - its just in the perfect region if you want to visit medieval places :-)

    Definitely the GNM in Nuremburg - and if you are a museum-goer, you might even want to set two days aside for this one.

    You might also consider going to Bamberg, which also has a very picturesque town. Regensburg is also very nice. If you are looking for a hike, the "Franconian Switzerland" is a beautiful region for that. And if you are in Erlangen when I'm not somewhere else, we can meet for a cup of coffee if you like - you can mail me if you'd like to ("contact" on my blogger profile page).

    The Romanesque cathedral at Speyer is worth a visit. In my case, two visits, three visits. It is so old and dark with just the light from smallish windows high up in the nave streaming in that the only way I could take a picture there was to open up the aperature on my camera and leave it sitting on a stoney place for over an hour! During that time, mass was held but neither the priest nor the participants were registered on the picture, all as evanescent as the ancient people who have also passed that way.
